MEET THE COACHES

Head Coach, Steve Lewis

Outside of teaching science at Kettle Moraine High School, I have been the girls head track coach since 1998 and the girls head cross country coach since 2009.  My philosophy there is similar to what I have in class, to have the athletes grow throughout their season and throughout there career.  I received my USA track and field certification in 1999 for level 1 (general cert, of which less than 2% of all high school coaches have earned).  I earned my level 2 in the specialty areas of hurdles and horizontal jumps in 2004, at the time I was the first high school coach in the state to earn that certification.

Hello! My name is Jane Matter. I grew up in Holmen, WI attending Holmen High School. From Holmen I attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. While at Whitewater I was on the track and field team, worked as an assistant in the business offices, managed a landscaping crew, and worked in the fitness facility. I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Education degree in December of 2010. I majored in English and Minored in Special Education.
Upon graduation, I was a long term substitute teacher at Mukwonago High School, and then was fortunate enough to earn a position here at Kettle Moraine High school. I value each and every one of my students, striving on a daily basis to create a safe and positive learning environment.
When I was ten years old, I decided to become a teacher, and from that point on I knew I would try each and every day to teach much more than the content of the classroom, but the essential life lessons which can help to make all students stronger, more active members of society.

NOTES FROM THE COACH

Girls Cross Country is a no-cut Varsity and JV level sport. The girls participate in 4K runs at meets with area school districts. The official season for cross country runs mid-August through October or early November. Our team currently consists of 51 girls, which is an all-time high for number of participants in this sport. The Varsity team is made up of the top 7 or 8 runners from the entire team. This can change week by week based on the times of each runner. The remainder of the team runs on the JV squad. The JV team is unlimited as to the number of runners allowed. Typically the top 5 to 7 runners on JV are considered the 'scoring JV' for the team. In some meets, races are broken down to include a third category, which would group all freshman runners in a category by themselves.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT IN THE SEASON...

The Girls Cross Country season begins in mid-August and runs through October or early November.  Typically we host two home meets which are held at Nagawaukee Park in Delafield.

Each meet that we compete in is a 4K. Our meets are held weekly at local parks, area school grounds, and some nationally recognized courses.  The girls will have their fill of running on grass, wood chips, up hills and through the woods and almost to grandma's house!

We provide bus transportation to all of our away meets.  Our home meets are held at Nagawaukee Park and each girl is responsible for a ride to and from the meet.  To view a list of the locations of our meets, please see the Maps and Addresses link on the Girls CC website.

Please refer to the Calendar of Events for our schedule.

PRACTICE

Practice for Girls Cross Country varies throughout the summer and fall months.  In mid-June, about a week after the school year ends, Coach Lewis will offer an OPTIONAL practice. Typically these practices are held on Monday mornings from 9:00am-11:00am and on Wednesday evenings from 5:00pm-7:00pm weather permitting. Both of these optional practices meet at the Park & Ride at the Nagawaukee Ice Rink located at I-94 and Hwy. 83 in Delafield.  The girls spend the majority of the time running in Nagawaukee Park.  These optional practices run for 6 weeks.  This is the perfect opportunity for any girl who is interested or slightly interested in Cross County to come and meet some of the other girls and try the workouts. Cross Country will challenge you as an individual and as a key member of the team.

In August, as the school years nears, practices will be daily and alternate between the morning and afternoon hours. These practices will be held at Kettle Moraine High School and are mandatory for girls who wish to be on the team.  We may occasionally bus the girls off-site to train in the local parks.

Once the school year begins, practice will continue to be held daily after school and all team members are expected at practice each day.  Practices will continue either on the school grounds or we will bus the girls of-site to train in the local parks.

VOLUNTEER HOURS

Each athlete is expected to volunteer during the school year through the Booster Club.  The Booster Club oversees the concession stands for the various sporting events.  It is recommended that each Cross Country team member volunteer several times throughout the year with these opportunities.  For every hour that a Cross Country member and/or parent volunteers, the hours go toward our team.  The Booster Club records these hours and then can support our team financially when the need arises.  Funds can go toward equipment, uniforms, coaches fees, buses, etc.   There are endless opportunities to volunteer and most shifts are in two-hour increments.  So grab a teammate and let's run to volunteer!
